Charles Despiau
Charles Despiau was born in Mont-de-Marsan on November 4, 1874 and died in Paris on October 28, 1946. Together with Auguste Rodin, Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Aristide Maillol, he is considered one of the most important French sculptors of that period. His oeuvre consists of approximately 150 sculptures and 1000 drawings. That's not much, but Despiau worked on a sculpture for years. Despiau is sometimes called the inspiration for figurative abstraction. The emphasis was on characterization and omitting unnecessary details.
