Eva Mendlik

Eva Mendlik (1928-2014) was born on May 5, 1928. Her grandparents Julie Mijnsen and Oscar Mendlik, both Prix de Rome winners, were decisive in her choice to become a sculptor. Eva received her training from 1947-1951 at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam by Jan Bronner and Piet Esser. She then studied for a year in Brussels at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs with Oscar Jespers. She then worked for a year and a half in Italy and France and then at Ciacomo Manzù in Salzburg and Milan.

She studied together with Johan Sterenberg and Theresia van der Pant and belongs to the figurative abstraction movement. People and animals are the subject of her images in various materials. In terms of message, the portraits with their subdued expression and faint smile are very subtle. The exhibition features the bronze portrait Christl (46 cm, 1955).

During high school, Eja Siepman van den Berg came into contact with the Hungarian sculptor Eva Mendlik. She received her first lessons from her.
