Marijke van Overbeek
Marijke van Overbeek (1950) creates sculptures and installations. She graduated from the monumental design department at the Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch in 1976, specialising in plastic and textile design.
Immediately after graduating she worked as a drawing and painting teacher. In 1990, she returned to her artistic calling.
In addition to ceramic torsos and female sculptures she creates sculptures from many materials. She started a series of textile sculptures in 2002. Van Overbeek focuses mostly on “man in his cultural and psychological habitat” in her work. Her sculptures often show a single figure with clear, narrative properties. This narrative is evident in materials, attributes and/or the title of the sculpture.
