Artists

Mathieu Nab

Mathieu Nab (1966) grew up in a family of artists and lives and works in the Amsterdam port. He studied sculpture and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam until 1989. Ever since, Nab has been choosing his own path and knows very well what he wants to convey through his sculptures as an artist: his amazement at the beauty of life, and triggering this amazement in others. His works are often large, monumental wooden or marble sculptures that he shapes using the ‘taille-directe’ method. For his wooden sculptures he prefers azobe wood, a very strong type of wood that is often used for hydraulic engineering constructions. Nabs sculptures give off an independent impression through the characteristic materials he uses, as well as the abstracted, sloping shapes that Nab manages to discover in them. Nab finds it important that his sculptures are experienced by the viewer, without the use of explanations and interpretations.
